Fine recordings of ragtime, vintage jazz, and dance bands

He makes Joplin sound a little less classical and a little more jazz.And, I admire this man’s skill. The album is a pleasure to listen to.

Checked this recording out just out of curiosity without high expectations. But it’s really wonderful. Both faithful to the original ABC full of very cool modern explorations.

While her liner notes profess a style influenced by Al Bowlly and Cliff Edwards, I found her performances more reflective of Ruth Etting - in a manner that has never been properly captured by cinematic tributes. Her smooth, easy, slightly nasal intonation to the classics also matches the sounds of the late acoustic and early electrical recordings of these under-performed standards, but without the *clicks* and *hiss* of over-played 78s. In short, it's an evening at a speakeasy without distracting cigars or police raids.

While listening to ragtime, I often find myself dreaming of one day learning to play a lot of those songs, but it’s usually impossible to find good sheet music. I was listening to the CD, and I was immediately intrigued by Tom Brier’s “Delphinium Rag.” As an unapologetic fanboy of his, I began obsessing over somehow learning it. Luckily, Rivermont Records had thought of this scenario already, so now I have access to the beautifully formatted sheet music of Delphinium Rag and all the other songs in the album. I will definitely be getting the folio for Part 2.

First of all, 78rpm vinyl is an astonishing auditory experience, The closest releases in the past were the 45rpm issues of the late 1980s as CDs began to emerge as the dominating force. The bundle here is great to hear, experience, and watch on a turntable. Vince Giordano puts one in mind of the great Hal Roach soundtracks of Marvin Hatley, Miss Maybell croons my dad's favorite song ("Put Your Arms Around Me Honey") and the Lovestruck Balladders sound better each time I play it, and each time louder (need to etch an "11" on my volume dial). A bargain in a bundle, and one that'll outlive me or my wax cylinders!

This record will certainly be among me cherished possesions for as long as I can for see. The sound quality is beautiful, and the musicianship is second to none. Even the sleeve art is quite beautiful. It is also important to me insofar as the Nighthawks were really my introduction to this older music, with which I am now frankly obsessed, something I won't soon forget. And this record is a fitting and wonderful reminder of that to me.

Wonderful sounding stereo. Natural channel balance and not that fake "ping-pong" sound that some record companies did. Nice to hear this kind of music in true high fidelity. Let's see how much material you can put onto a 12" record, like a long play 78. Modern technology allows up to 35 minutes plus at 33 1/2 so you could put as much as 17 minutes at 78.

I love the 78rpm releases. It is amazing how good they sound!

Quel bonheur de découvre dans un paquet de CD de chez Rivermontrecord, toutes ces pépites du CD d’Ed Clute. Mais que dire de cette pépite pianistique au travers de M. Ed Clute que l’on connaît moins en France que nos frères américains. Merci pour l’émotion contenue dans ce CD, les sourires et les larmes d’émotion , en attendant très prochainement le deuxième CD qui devrait arriver dans le package des CD en attente de la traversée de l’Atlantique.
