A 30-year wait

Had an LP been released in 1960 of tracks recorded thirty years earlier which had not previously seen the light of day it would have created a sensation. Well this is the modern-day equivalent of that fictional example. It was recorded in 1992 to recreate the sound of Chicago jazz, but then languished on the shelves for lack of finance. That is, until its existence was drawn to the attention of Bryan Wright, who arranged for it to be issued on his Rivermont label. The CD is contained within an 80-page hardback book, copiously illustrated on glossy paper. That includes the history of the original recordings, the musicians involved in the recreation, an essay on the Chicago jazz style, and much else. Words alone cannot do it justice; the performances are magnificent, and the sound quality is quite superb, with every instrument clearly discernible. It’s an incredible bargain, and I cannot recommend it too highly

First class in every respect

The scholars have already raved about this set -- see Michael Steinman's Jazz Lives blog and Will Friedwald in the Wall Street Journal, for example -- so I'll just add this: even if you ordinarily are reluctant to listen to something that doesn't rotate at 78 rpm, you will love this music and the amazingly lavish, 80-page booklet. Cheers to the musicians and the essayists, and to Rivermont for giving them the most deluxe treatment.

Truly Outstanding

Wow. This is a genuinely outstanding CD — in its musicianship, sound quality and presentation. Kudos to musician Dan Levinson and to Bryan Wright of Rivermont Records for breathing life into brilliant music that unfortunately had been unreleased for literally 30 years. Produced by the legendary George Avakian, the disc captures so many talented players at the top of their game, including a young Dan Levinson in the studio for the very first time. These are real pros here, playing Chicago-style jazz on a superb, well-chosen set list. As for the presentation, it’s first class, very high quality. Clearly this was a labor of love for Rivermont and it shows — from the sound quality to the exceptional booklet, complete with interesting, authoritative and value-added liner notes. An impressive job. One Step to Chicago is essential to to any complete jazz collection, especially for lovers of Chicago-style jazz. Well worth the price!

The announcement that Rivermont was issuing a heretofore unknown George Avakian produced recording session from 1992 of Chicago style jazz was startling. As a fan of that genre going back to the 1927 McKenzie and Condon’s Chicagoans sessions, I found this to be tremendous news. Learning that the session featured two groupings: (1) a note-by-note recreation of Frank Teschmacher recordings from the period by Dick Hyman and his Frank Teschmacher Celebration Band and (2) freewheeling recordings of tunes associated with Tesch by Kenny Davern and his Windy City Stompers added to the excitement. With Kenny, Dan Levinson and Ken Peplowski on reeds, Dan Barrett, Peter Ecklund and Jon-Erik Kellso on brass plus great rhythm sections, this was a “can’t miss” recording session. With modern recording techniques, the performances bring new life to the fabled tunes associated with the Austin High Gang and Chicago Style jazz. A shame that George Avakian, producer of Decca’s 1940 album “Chicago Jazz” and this session did not live long enough to see this music finally issued. But, better late than never. Rivermont has given this the deluxe treatment as included is an 80-page book with several articles and photos detailing the history and circumstances surrounding the session. Highly recommended in whichever format (CD, LP, digital download) one prefers.

So much fun!

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this new album “One Step To Chicago.” The musicians are top-notch and the recording quality is excellent. Although it was made from analog tape recordings in a project started 30 years ago, I did not hear any degradation or even “tape hiss.” The first six tracks, Dick Hyman and His Frank Teschemacher Celebration Band, are my favorites - I wish there were more. The rest of the tracks are quite a bit longer, with the trad-jazz tradition of having solo features for many of the musicians.

There are extensive notes bound into an 80-page hardcover book (CD size), more than half written by Dan Levinson. The original recordings are in the New York Public Library, and these notes should be stored next to them.

This album should please fans of traditional, Chicago-style jazz. Thank you to Bryan Wright and Rivermont Records for publishing this.

"One Step To Chicago": More than terrifically performed Jazz in Chicago's pioneering style

The music on "One Step To Chicago" CD holds center stage. How couldn't it considering the all-star cast of luminaries, in the various ensembles, on it -not the least of whom include Masters: Messrs. Hyman and Hinton. Beside the ensemble of today's best early-jazz specialists, each deeply familiar with Chicago's ‘edgy,’ signature style (formed in the mid 1920s), it was recorded in modern studio conditions, capturing the irrepressible energy, spontaneity, joy and discovery of the young musicians who first pioneered, and recorded it. But here (unlike 78s) the music has full tone and the instruments are clear and in fine balance.

Regarding the matter of "improvisation" vs " historic performance preservation" : The songs are we divided (by Mr. Davern's and Mr. Hyman's curation) into those that are authoritative note-for-note replications of historic recordings and those that were spontaneously performed, for this recording true to the Chicago style.

Additionally, worth more than the price of admission: The history and musical DNA is unpacked in fabulous 80-pages of liner notes, containing the background behind the original recordings and (fast forwarding to) the story surrounding the nearly lost , miraculously resurrected 1992 project that is the core of this CD.

This is a monumental labor of love; it should more than satisfy, invigorate and inform anyone with a heartbeat, and wish to better appreciate and understand the music, the style and its history.

A Must Have Classic!!

I had pre-ordered the vinyl pressings of this project that I had heard about and read about. I ordered directly through the Rivermont website and found it to be a seamless process from ordering through shipment and receipt.

It is always a surprise and a joy when “experience exceeds expectations” and such was certainly the case after listening to these disks. The double album has beautiful cover graphics and the liner notes and back credits are superbly done. The included booklet written by Dan Levinson, Hal Smith and Marty Grosz is a dream read for lovers of this music. In addition, the photographs in the booklet added in bringing this wonderful project to life. Having just met Dan Levinson at the NOLA Trad Jazz Camp (and getting to play in his ensemble at Preservation Hall), I particularly enjoyed the photo of a young Dan, with shirtsleeves rolled up to mid-bicep, blowing hard. While I thoroughly enjoyed every tune, I can never get enough of Darktown and the 8:20 minute run of this tune did not disappoint. My other favs were Wolverine Blues, Indians and I’ve Found a New Baby. The album or CD’s are a collector’s item that I will cherish and share with all of my musical friends.

A remarkable collection of standards from long, long ago, performed by a truly magnificent group of musicians. I agree with the other review that is was amazing that it was unheard for three decades. My favorite tracks are "China Boy" and "Indiana," but all of the songs are wonderful. The package is exceptional with detailed history, liner notes and photographs. And again let me agree with the other reviewer--I also ordered directly from Rivermont and it arrived in 4 days! Thank you so much!

An amazing recording!

It's an amazing thing that after 30 years this recording is "out of the can." Every cut is a gem, made especially so by this "new" music from some musicians who are sadly no longer with us. (Along with quite a few who are, and who are now older and wiser, but sounded great 30 years ago as they each do today.) And the liner note book that comes with the CD is wonderful, especially the thoughtful writing from Dan Levinson, who in 1992 was the youngest musician in the group, and is today not only a terrific performer, but also a top scholar and teacher of traditional jazz. Added to that, I ordered directly from Rivermont, and my CD was received so quickly I wondered if they'd shot it across the US on a rocket!
